Does anyone else struggle to find convenient savoury snacks?! I’m often searching the cupboards for a little something-something in the late afternoons, and usually end up succumbing to something sweet, which just encourages sugar cravings. Recently I’ve been trying my hand at dried seaweed sheets (try it – so yum!) and rice crackers.
I’m always banging on about reading labels on your food, so forgive if you’re an avid reader, but here I go again…
Added MSG
There’s so many hidden things in foods these days that it’s so important to scan what goes into your basket. On the rice cracker front, I’ve been eating Sakata – as the only major rice cracker brand to contain no artificial colours, flavours or added MSG across its entire range. They removed all added flavour enhancers back in 2010 in response to consumer demand. When buying any snacks, look out for added Monosodium Glutamate (MSG) – also written as Added MSG, Flavour enhancer 621, or Monosodium Glutamate. It does occur natural in some foods (I’m looking at you tomatoes), but many companies add it artificially to enhance the taste of your snacks with an umami taste that intensifies the meaty, savoury flavour of food.

“Ever since my training days I’ve always had Sakata in my pantry because I know they’re the only major rice cracker brand with no added MSG and no artificial colours and flavours across their range.”Sakata rice crackers were recommended as a nutritious snack food by her dietitian as part of her professional training regime due to their simple product formulation and because they’re free from ingredients such as artificial flavour enhancers and added MSG. Now Libby has retired from competitive swimming her focus has turned to ensuring she’s fuelling her family with healthy snacking options.
“I no longer have a dietitian on-hand to advise me, I know just how difficult it can be when shopping for yourself or your family. I always stick with Sakata as my trusted choice as I know they’re free from artificial flavour enhancers.”
Recipe
I love mine with beet hummus, avocado, strawberries (trust me!), a drizzle of balsamic, olive oil and sea salt. Throw on a few seeds for texture and you’ve got one amazing snack.
